EFL Chair Rick Parry Defends Football Gambling Sponsorships
In a recent turn of events, Rick Parry, the chairman of the English Football League (EFL), has staunchly defended the right of football to benefit from responsible betting sponsorships. This statement comes amidst ongoing debates about the impact of such sponsorships on gambling addiction and harm.
The issue has gained significant attention following the ten-month ban imposed on midfielder Sandro Tonali by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). Tonali, who is reportedly suffering from a gambling addiction, is under investigation for possible breaches of betting rules in England by the Football Association (FA).
The controversy further intensified with the stance taken by the Big Step campaign, part of the Gambling with Lives charity. They argued that heavy sanctions on players battling addiction are counterproductive, likening it to “sending an alcoholic to work in a pub.” Their perspective underscores the complex challenge of addressing gambling addiction within the sporting community.
Parry, whose organization recently renewed its title sponsorship deal with Sky Bet through to 2029, highlighted the financial benefits of such partnerships. Since the Gambling Act's introduction in 2005, betting companies have profited immensely from sports, and Parry believes it's only fair for a portion of that revenue to flow back into the sport. He emphasized that extensive research commissioned by the EFL has not shown any direct correlation between sponsorship and an increase in gambling or related harm.
Balancing Sponsorship with Responsible Gambling Initiatives
The EFL's partnership with Sky Bet has been lauded in the UK government's white paper on gambling reform as a model of socially responsible agreement. Since 2018, Sky Bet funding has supported the EPIC Risk Awareness programme, educating players and staff at all 72 EFL clubs. This initiative has reached over 2,200 individuals in the past two years.
Furthermore, Flutter, Sky Bet's parent company, is investing UK£20 million (US$24.7 million) this year in broader research, education, and treatment efforts. Parry emphasized the importance of responsible behavior and education in combating gambling addiction. He acknowledged that while eliminating gambling harm is challenging, it is vital to provide support and education rather than solely focusing on punishment.
The EFL Week of Action, designated this week, highlights the social benefits provided by club community organizations. Additionally, Sky Bet has committed UK£1 million (US$1.2 million) annually to the Building Foundations Fund, supporting community organizations linked to the 72 EFL clubs.
In conclusion, while acknowledging the complexities surrounding gambling addiction in sports, Rick Parry stands firm on the importance and benefits of responsible gambling sponsorships. The EFL's approach focuses on education, support, and rehabilitation, aiming to strike a balance between the financial benefits of such sponsorships and the well-being of the players and the wider community.
