Following a recent $10 million renovation that transformed the casino into a bright, Vegas-inspired space, Delaware’s only casino and racetrack is now constructing a 10,000-square-foot outdoor patio. Once completed, it will become the largest outdoor gaming area in the state, according to Delaware Park’s president, Terry Glebocki.

Glebocki said that the new patio will feature 250 slot machines and provide the fresh air and spaciousness many patrons have come to appreciate post-pandemic.

Post-COVID, one of the things we’ve learned is that people like being outdoors, they like having their space, they like fresh air, and a lot of people are wearing masks. This gives an option to people looking for that fresh air experience. Because this patio has so much open air, it’s considered an outdoor space.

Slots Patio to Open in Spring 2025

When Glebocki joined Delaware Park last year, she identified the potential for a sizable patio. Now, work is underway and DiSabatino Construction is aiming for a spring 2025 opening, just as patrons start spending more time outdoors. The area will also be heated for use during colder months.

The new outdoor space will allow patrons to drink, smoke, and play slots simultaneously. The patio, while enclosed by walls, has a six-foot gap between the roof and barriers, which keeps it classified as an open-air space under Delaware law. In summer, fans will circulate air, while outdoor heaters will ensure comfort during winter.

As with gambling venues in Atlantic City before the smoking ban, the state has met with some opposition from groups focused on nonsmoking rights. Cynthia Hallett, president of Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights, criticized the design and said that the casino is “making a mockery of state law that is intended to protect all workers and guests from dangerous secondhand smoke.”

Glebocki, however, maintains that the patio meets Delaware's outdoor space standards, adding that the casino will install dividers between machines and ensure ample airflow throughout the area.

The Return of 24/7 Table Games

In addition to the outdoor patio, Delaware Park will reintroduce round-the-clock table games starting November 8, marking the first time 24/7 table games have been available since the pandemic. Slot machines on the casino’s first floor returned to continuous operation earlier this year, ahead of other casinos in Delaware.
