Churchill Downs Given Licenses to Operate Sports Betting in Kentucky

Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI), the United States racetrack operator, has announced it has been given approval by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) to operate retail sports betting from six racetracks in Kentucky starting in September.

The KHRC, the regulator of horseracing in the state, has issued six temporary licenses that allow the CDI-owned racetracks in Kentucky to operate retail sports betting, which was signed into legislation by Governor Andy Beshear.

Opening Ceremonies

The six CDI racetracks in Kentucky to offer sports betting include Churchill Downs Racetrack, Turfway Park Racing & Gaming and Ellis Park Racing & Gaming.

The retails sports betting venues will start operating from the 7th September and each racetrack is set to hold an opening ceremony. Governor Beshear will attend the opening event at Churchill Downs Racetrack and will place the first bet in the opening ceremony.

Each sportsbook will feature multiple betting kiosks for customers to place a wager, and the venues will have screens located around the venues for sports enthusiasts to watch live racing and major league sports.

Online Sports Betting

As part of the sweeping changes to the introduction of sports betting in the state of Kentucky, the KHRC has made provisions for digital sports betting to commence at the end of next month.

The KHRC has granted temporary online sports betting licenses to three gaming operators FanDuel, Penn Sports Interactive and Fanatics.

From 28th September these three operators in concert with CDI will provide an online sports betting service that covers the horseracing meetings from the six tracks in Kentucky operated by CDI.
