This has led to  a positive reaction from Charles Barkley, the former NBA star and resident of Alabama, when asked I he would like to be part of a consortium of African American businessmen to control a gaming venue in the state. His response was “Hell yeah, I would love to be part of it.”

This is another attempt to bring gaming to the state of Alabama which has all proved unsuccessful since voters rejected a proposed state lottery in 1999. Other attempts such as the one last year led to the Alabama senate limiting gambling proposals which would have greatly reduced casino and sports betting in the region.

This bill is being worked on by Sen. Greg Albritton, R-Atmore who believes it can achieve the 21 senate votes required to pass and has recently received the backing of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, which said it would support a bill that includes casinos, a state lottery and sports gambling.

Proposals to Include a Minority-Owned Casino

It is Sen. Bobby Singleton who has asked for a change to the proposed bill to include a minority owned casino, which would hopefully lead to a more diversified ownership model and potentially might lead to a casino in a different location.

One of the venues in the state for an African American casino has been Birmingham and this has been received favourably by respondents who say this would be a good location as well as the state’s largest city.

Charles is a favorite in the state, I would love to see a group with someone like Mr. Barkley get involved with others to have real ownership, a true 51% that belongs to us, and make sure we could build a destination spot here in the state and bring forth the fruits of that industry to our community.
