Buenos Aires No Longer Issuing Online Casino Licenses
The Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, has halted the issuance of new online casino licenses due to rising concerns about underage gambling.

LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:Upon the launch of the city’s iGaming market in 2020, the gambling regulator, LOTBA, authorized the expansion of online gambling, leading to 11 operators obtaining licenses to operate within the city.
However, the decision to stop accepting new license applications for online casinos was made in response to a significant rise in underage gambling. This decision was announced last week by LOTBA’s president, Jesús Acevedo, along with city government head Jorge Macri and other officials.
Licensed Operators to Undergo Compliance Review
In an effort to safeguard minors, officials explained that the gambling regulator will conduct a thorough compliance review of licensed operators. This review will ensure adherence to gaming regulations designed to prevent minors from accessing gambling services.
Additionally, licensed operators will be monitored for compliance with limits on spending and playing time, as well as the implementation of responsible gambling measures such as self-exclusion options.
To further tackle illegal gambling, the local government has partnered with social media and e-commerce platforms to remove or block content and profiles promoting illegal gambling, particularly those targeting minors.
These efforts have resulted in the removal of 715 social media profiles and advertisements from Facebook and Instagram so far in 2024. Lawmakers have also requested the blocking of 12 websites and the restriction of access to 9 publications, all linked to illegal gambling promotions.

LOTBA emphasized that only gambling websites with .bet domains are authorized in Buenos Aires. They reiterated that minors are strictly prohibited from accessing live casinos and online gambling sites.
Additional measures to protect minors include educational workshops in schools, which provide important information to students, parents, and families.
The city is also working to block access to both legal and illegal gambling websites on public school WIFI networks, with plans to extend this restriction to all public free WIFI networks across Buenos Aires.
