Brigid Simmonds Announces Official Exit of BGC Chair Role
Brigid Simmonds (OBE) is set to resign as Chair of the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), as confirmed by the UK gambling industry trade and standards body.
Simmonds has been the Chair of the BGC since its inception in 2019. Before this role, she served as Chief Executive of the British Beer & Pub Association for a decade and held the position of Chief Executive at the umbrella organization Business in Sport and Leisure (BISL) before that.

Advancing Responsible Gambling and Industry Growth
Under Simmonds' leadership, the BGC achieved significant milestones, securing over £100 million in increased funding for research, education, and treatment (RET) projects addressing gambling-related harms. Additionally, her tenure implemented a new advertising code of conduct for BGC members, including the 'whistle-to-whistle' ban on live sports broadcast advertising and increased visibility of safer gambling messaging.
Before the release of the Gambling Review's White Paper, Simmonds actively participated in select committees for UK gambling, advocating for an industry responsible for creating over 110,000 jobs and contributing £4.2 billion in annual direct taxes to the government.
It has been a privilege to play my part in the development of the BGC since its formation in 2019 and it has been an honor to represent the 110,000 people whose jobs rely on the regulated betting and gaming industry. I would like to thank the Executive Committee, colleagues, members, charities and stakeholders, who have supported me and worked very hard to deliver all of the achievements of which the BGC is rightly proud.
Recruitment to Commence Immediately
The BGC's executive committee announced that Brigid Simmonds will conclude her five-year term on April 20th, and will be succeeded by the current CEO, Michael Dugher. The BGC also stated that recruitment for a new CEO, led by an external firm, will commence immediately.
I would like to pay tribute to Brigid for all the incredible work she has done at the BGC. She has made a massive contribution during her four and a half years as Chairman, launching the organization and bringing together the different sectors.
