Birmingham Racecourse Acquired by Wind Creek Hospitality
Wind Creek Hospitality is set to complete its acquisition of the Birmingham Racecourse and Casino by early 2025.
Wind Creek to expand with Birmingham Racecourse acquisition.
Situated in Alabama, the venue will continue to feature parimutuel and historical horseracing games under its new ownership. Wind Creek, owned by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, plans to work with local officials and racing authorities to explore potential expansions and build on prior investments in the property.
Gaming Legislation Hampering Competitiveness
The McGregor family, the current owners, has said that gaming legislation has proved to be a barrier to remaining competitive. They plan to shift their focus to VictoryLand Casino in Macon County, where they will also advocate for unified gaming laws in Alabama.
The people of Birmingham desire the same types of entertainment offered at other facilities in and around Alabama. Unfortunately, differing state laws and enforcement actions regarding gaming have limited our ability to compete effectively. The McGregor family will now focus their efforts on VictoryLand in Macon County and advocate for unified gaming legislation in Alabama which would capture much-needed revenue for the people of Alabama.
Jay Dorris, President and CEO of Wind Creek Hospitality, is full of enthusiasm for the acquisition. He said that the company shares many of the same goals as the McGregor family, namely “providing great entertainment, attracting tourism, and creating economic growth in Alabama.” He added that they are “really looking forward to welcoming their employees and to moving forward together.”
