Data from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) shows that 30,493 people have registered for the service. BetStop, which went live on August 21, 2023, includes all licensed online and phone-based betting operators in the country.

The statistics, which cover the period up to September 30, 2024, show that 23,182 individuals had active self-exclusion agreements in place by that date. This means that 7,311 people either completed their self-exclusion period or chose to end it early.

New South Wales Tops BetStop Registrations

The majority of BetStop sign-ups were players based in New South Wales. The data shows that 9,537 people from the region have joined the program, with 1,482 of them signing up in the last quarter alone (July to September 2024).

Following New South Wales, there were 8,193 registrations in Victoria. Queensland recorded 6,140 sign-ups, while Western Australia had 3,279 and South Australia 1,871. Other states and territories each had fewer than 1,000 registrations.

ACMA’s figures also show that BetStop sign-ups have decreased for three consecutive quarters. In the first quarter of the 2024-25 financial year, 4,521 individuals joined the program, compared to 5,087 in the previous quarter (April to June 2024) and 5,445 in the quarter before that. This past quarter saw the lowest number of sign-ups since the program launched.

Younger Players More Likely to Self-Exclude

The data also reveals that younger people are more likely to use BetStop. Nearly half of the total sign-ups (49%), or 15,007 people, were from users aged 30 or younger. The next largest group was those between the ages of 31 and 40, who made up 30% of registrations. Those aged 41 to 50 made up 12%, followed by those aged 51 to 60 at 6%. Only 3% of participants were aged 60 or older.

In terms of the period of gambling self-exclusion chosen, 39% of registrants, or 11,839 people, chose a lifetime ban. Another 39%, or 12,081 people, opted for exclusion periods ranging from three months to two years.

Around 17% chose to self-exclude for just three months, while 4% opted for durations of between two and five years. Only 1% of users selected exclusion periods longer than five years.

All licensed betting operators in Australia are required to promote BetStop on their websites, apps, and marketing materials, and the ACMA is actively monitoring compliance to ensure the program is properly implemented.
