The ADG is alerting the public to a scam in which fraudsters pretend to be regulator officials to steal personal information and defraud individuals. According to the gaming authority, it has also uncovered evidence of scammers falsely claiming ties to the National Indian Gaming Commission, the Indian Gaming Association, and the Publisher's Clearing House in an attempt to gain the trust of their victims.

The scammers have been targeting victims with fake notifications of sweepstakes wins or prizes. In other cases, they contacted individuals, demanding payment for allegedly overdue taxes or fees.

To combat the rising tide of gaming scams, the Arizona Attorney General's Office has issued guidelines to educate and protect state residents from being exploited by scammers.

The office, led by Kris Mayes, urges residents to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited calls, particularly those involving financial transactions. To avoid falling prey to scams, the office advises patrons to verify the caller’s information, including the contracting organization and official contract numbers.

Nationwide Call Scams on the Rise

The ADG is not the only entity concerned about the surge in gaming scams. In July 2023, the National Indian Gaming Commission issued a letter to tribal leaders, gaming regulators, and operators, informing them about an increase in nationwide call scams targeting the gaming industry.

The scammers pulled off several schemes, posing as representatives of gaming vendors, tribal officials, and state regulators, which resulted in significant financial losses totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The commission advised patrons to report the scams to local law enforcement and FBI offices in their jurisdictions.
