Identified only by her surname, Shin, the woman in her 50s is accused of running these illegal establishments at 12 different locations, including Ulsan and Wonju in Gangwon Province, from 2021 until just last month. The news was initially reported by the local cable broadcaster TV Chosun.

Han So-Hee Distances Herself from Mother's Arrest

In response to the arrest, Han So-Hee’s agency, 9Ato Entertainment, released a statement distancing the actress from her mother’s actions. The agency emphasized that this incident is "an extremely personal matter" for Han and clarified that the actress herself learned about the arrest through media reports, leaving her "devastated and at a loss for words."

The agency further stressed that "this incident is entirely the arbitrary action of the mother and has nothing to do with the actor." Shin’s recent arrest is not her first brush with the law. She has faced allegations of criminal activities in the past, most notably in 2020, when she was accused of fraud.

At the time, a netizen claimed that Shin had absconded with money from a savings club. Following this accusation, Han So-Hee revealed that she had been raised by her maternal grandmother from the age of five after her parents divorced, leading to a distant relationship with her mother.

I wasn’t on speaking terms with my mother, and I only learned of her debt when I was 20 years old. Since she was the daughter of my grandmother who raised me, and partly due to filial duty, I paid off as much of her debt as I could before I debuted as an actor.

A Troubled Family History

In 2022, Han So-Hee’s reputation was further tested when a YouTube channel alleged that her mother had taken out a loan of 85 million won (approximately $63,400) from an acquaintance using a bank account opened in Han’s name without her knowledge. At that time, 9Ato Entertainment clarified that the account was opened by Shin when Han was still a minor.

The agency made it clear that Han had no intention of repaying her mother’s debts, stating that this decision was made to prevent Shin from exploiting her daughter’s fame for financial gain. The agency's stance was firm:

Han’s mother Shin used a bank account in Han’s name to borrow money. The account was opened arbitrarily by Shin when Han was a minor. She used it to take out loans without Han’s knowledge.

The arrest of Shin adds another chapter to a tumultuous relationship that has been marked by repeated attempts by the mother to exploit her daughter’s success for personal gain. Despite these challenges, Han So-Hee remains one of South Korea’s most popular and respected actors, with her agency working hard to ensure that her mother’s actions do not tarnish her career.
