$5 Billion Donated by Empire City Casino to New York Education
MGM Resorts’ Empire City Casino has now contributed more than $5 billion to New York State’s educational system.
Since its launch in 2006 as a venue offering video lottery terminals (VLTs), Empire City has played an important role in strengthening New York’s economy, with its positive effects particularly evident in Westchester County and the Bronx.
Acquired by MGM Resorts International in 2019 for $850 million, the Yonkers-based casino has donated over $1.3 billion to K-12 public schools in the past five years. These funds account for approximately 30% of the total revenue generated by VLT casinos statewide. Empire City provides around $25 million monthly, which makes it one of the main sources of educational funding in New York.
Support Beyond Education
Empire City Casino’s contributions extend well beyond schools. Each year, the venue channels hundreds of millions of dollars into harness racing as well as local and state governments, giving it an integral role in the region’s economy.
Since MGM Resorts took ownership, the company has invested heavily in modernizing the property. Enhancements include upgrades to Yonkers Raceway, such as new track surfaces, LED lighting, and an advanced tote board. The casino floor has also undergone significant changes, including the addition of a VIP gaming room and innovative workspaces for staff.
Furthermore, Empire City Casino has become a vital employer in the community. The casino pays out more than $90 million in wages annually, with over 70% of employees residing in Yonkers, Mount Vernon, and the Bronx. Notably, more than 90% of its workforce is unionized, and many staff members have built long careers within the organization.

Exciting Plans for Expansion
Looking ahead, MGM Resorts has ambitious plans to expand Empire City Casino if it secures one of three commercial gaming licenses expected to be issued by New York State. A license would permit the addition of live dealer games, in-person sports betting, and Las Vegas-style slot machines.
The proposed upgrades envision a hugely improved entertainment destination. Plans include a larger casino floor, a 5,000-seat event venue, high-end dining options, and a cutting-edge BetMGM sportsbook. This transformation is projected to create 2,500 direct jobs, support over 10,000 positions indirectly, and generate over $1 billion in economic activity.
